IBC Tote Buying Guide
Choosing the right IBC tote depends on what you are storing or transporting, how much volume you need, and your budget. This guide walks through the key decisions.
275 Gallon vs. 330 Gallon
The two standard IBC tote sizes in North America are 275 and 330 gallons:
- 275 gallon (1,040 liters) — The most common size. Fits standard pallet footprint (48" x 40"). Compatible with most automated filling lines. Easier to handle when full due to lower weight.
- 330 gallon (1,250 liters) — 20% more capacity on the same footprint. More cost-efficient per gallon of storage. Best for facilities that can handle the extra weight (approximately 2,750 lbs when full of water).
Recommendation: Start with 275 gallon totes unless you have confirmed that your filling equipment, forklift capacity, and storage racks accommodate the taller 330 gallon size.
New vs. Rebottled
New IBC Totes
Best for:
- Food and beverage production (FDA compliance required)
- Pharmaceutical and cosmetic manufacturing
- Hazardous materials with strict packaging requirements
- Customers who need full traceability from manufacturer
Rebottled IBC Totes
Rebottled is the primary alternative to new. A rebottled IBC tote has a brand-new HDPE inner bottle installed inside an inspected steel cage and pallet. You get a food-grade, clean interior at 25-35% less than a fully new unit.
Best for:
- Food-grade applications on a budget
- Customers who need a clean interior but exterior cosmetics are less important
- Non-food chemical storage and transport
- Water storage and general industrial use

Material Compatibility
Standard IBC totes use high-density polyethylene (HDPE) for the inner bottle. HDPE is compatible with a wide range of chemicals, but not all. Check compatibility before storing:
- Compatible: Water, most acids (hydrochloric, sulfuric, phosphoric), bases (sodium hydroxide), detergents, most alcohols, food products
- Not recommended: Strong oxidizers, aromatics (benzene, toluene), chlorinated solvents, concentrated nitric acid
When in doubt, request a chemical compatibility data sheet from us or consult your chemical supplier's SDS (Safety Data Sheet) for container material recommendations.
Ordering Tips
- Buy in volume: Per-unit prices drop significantly at higher quantities. Check the volume pricing tiers on each product page.
- Consider FTL: If you need 21+ IBC totes, a full truckload shipment has much lower per-unit freight cost than multiple LTL shipments.
- Plan ahead: Freight delivery takes 3-7 business days. Order before you run out rather than when you run out.
- Set up a business account: Preferred, wholesale, and enterprise tiers unlock 3-12% off standard pricing as your order history grows.
- Request regular supply pricing: If you need containers monthly, our regular supply program locks in pricing and schedules deliveries automatically.
