How to Unload an IBC Tote

Receiving an IBC tote delivery requires some preparation. Here is what you need and how to do it safely.

Equipment Needed

  • Forklift (preferred) — rated for at least 2,500 lbs capacity per tote
  • Pallet jack — for ground-level positioning after liftgate delivery
  • PPE — steel-toed boots, high-vis vest, gloves
  • Camera or phone — for documenting the shipment condition

If you do not have a forklift or loading dock, order liftgate delivery so the carrier can lower the totes to ground level.

Step-by-Step

  1. Prepare the area: Clear the receiving area. Each IBC tote needs a 48" x 40" footprint. Ensure the surface is level and can support the weight.
  2. Inspect before signing: Before signing the carrier's delivery receipt, visually inspect every tote for cage damage, cracked bottles, leaking valves, or damaged pallets.
  3. Document damage: If you see any issues, note them on the delivery receipt and take photos. Do NOT refuse the shipment — accept it with noted damage so we can file a freight claim.
  4. Unload with forklift: Insert fork tines into the pallet openings (4-way entry). Lift slowly and clear the truck bed. Transport to the staging area.
  5. Or use a pallet jack: If the totes were lowered by liftgate, use a pallet jack to roll them into position. IBC totes are heavy (~135 lbs empty) — work on flat, smooth surfaces.
  6. Remove shrinkwrap: If totes were shrinkwrapped for transit, cut the wrap carefully to avoid scratching the bottle.
  7. Final inspection: Once positioned, do a detailed check: open and close the butterfly valve, check the cap seal, inspect the bottle for cracks or discoloration.

Safety Tips

  • Never stand under a raised IBC tote
  • Do not attempt to lift or tip an IBC tote manually — use equipment
  • Keep bystanders clear of the unloading area
  • If stacking, stack a maximum of 4 totes high on level ground
